Taupo To Tongariro

Mar.2 Taupo to Tongariro National Park

We started the day with breakfast on the shores of Lake Taupo. It is actually a caldera caused by an eruption over 1800 years ago. This Lake measures about 30 mikes by 20 miles. In the halfway point there is an island that is dedicated to the Maori burial sites. After breakfast we took a boat ride to see a contemporary Maori artist etchings in the rock cliffs. It took about 2 hours to get there and back, and it was a gorgeous day!

We headed to Tongariro National Park with a short stop in Taurangi. The drive was around Lake Taupo up in the mountains. It was beautiful. We are staying in Whakapapa village in the Chateau Tongariro right in the park. We have a large room overlooking the mountains and grounds. This area is actually NZ's biggest ski area. A large part of Lord of the Rings was filmed here in the park. Having dinner in he cafe tonight we met a couple from England and so we had a delightful conversation with them. George and Sara lived in Texas at one point and Rex Tillerson was his boss. They were not enamored with Trump, but said Tillerson was a stand- up guy. For that reason they didn't think he would last long working with Trump.
